It has been a phenomenally successful season on the football pitch for pupils at Crompton House School.

The trophy cabinet there is packed after the boys and girls teams won an impressive ten cups, leagues and tournaments , as well as picking up a number of runner up spots.

Successes for the boys ranged from four Oldham Schools League titles to a win at the two-day Easter Open international tournament in Holland which attracts teams from Europe and South America.

Two teams also made it to the Greater Manchester County Cup Final and Head of PE, Mr S. Deane said: “We have never won four Oldham leagues before. Unfortunately, we did not win the county finals but it is the most teams we have had in the final.

“We had some really good teams this year but they have also been very dedicated. Everyone turned up for each game, they always came to training and they had a really positive attitude to matches. They were losing in some finals and showed resilience to come back and win.

“The Year 10 team won every single game they played in Oldham and the Year 8s were brilliant – they won both their titles on penalties which is a very difficult way to win but they held their nerve.”

Girls’ football was introduced at Crompton House by PE teacher Mrs S. Ashton-smith when she joined the school three years ago.

Much of the girls’ success has been in futsal, a five-a-side version of the game which superstars such as Messi, Pele, Ronaldo and Xavi played as youngsters.

Mrs Ashton-Smith, a former Stockport County player, said: “The girls like it because it’s indoor, it’s fast-paced and it’s an up and coming sport.”

Some of the girls have gone on to play football for local teams such as Heyside and some went to trials at Manchester United last year.

Although they were not selected by United, two of them made it to the last 12 and one was in the last eight.”

Congratulations to all our footballers, and many thanks to all our PE teachers and football coaches. The pupils have played so many matches, and the school is very grateful to all the staff who have put in so much time and effort to enable the pupils to achieve so well.

The school is also very grateful to the sponsors of the teams, and to the hard work of the school and the FA in the recent years to build a high quality 3G pitch. This has allowed the pupils to train and play matches on such a good surface.  After this amazing season, what could we do next year?
