Design Technology

Design and Technology at Crompton House is a practical subject that encourages students to learn through applying theoretical concepts to practical solutions in real world situations. We encourage creativity to design and make and model products based on a range of design inspirations and foster inquisitive minds to solve problems using science and mathematical principles. Whilst providing opportunities for pupils to reflect, self-assess and evaluate their design and make skills.
Through a variety of creative and practical projects, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in the designing and making process. When designing and making, the Design and Technology department ensures pupils are familiar with all aspects of the design process. This is done at KS3 through a variety of project-based assignments and in year 9 pupils are taught more theoretical principles on materials, processes and design communication. At KS4 and 5 the department follows the AQA and OCR exam board specifications, breaking each unit of work down in to theoretical principles and focused practical tasks linking to the theory side of the specification.

We use a range of Key Performance Indicators and assessments to ensure pupils develop the following:

•Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently.

•Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

•Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.

•Understand and apply the principles of design and manufacture and learn how to make products, though designing and making a range of products.

•Develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world
