The year 8 girls booked their place in the English Schools Cup quarter final with a scintillating penalties victory away at St Mary’s College in Hull on Wednesday afternoon. It was the away side that took the lead 15 minutes into the first half – Olivia Shaw pouncing on a long range effort from midfielder Anna Killeen – that was spilled by the goalkeeper – and tapping home.
This was cancelled out on the stroke of half time, however, by a strike straight out of the top drawer; a half volley from midway into the Crompton House half, clipping the underside of the crossbar on the way into the top corner.
The game was an exciting contest, with both teams squandering good opportunities in normal time, before a stalemate in extra-time took the game to a penalty shootout.
It was then goalkeeper Isobel Walton who stepped up and became the hero – saving the first three penalties taken against her and providing the perfect platform for Killeen to strike low and hard to the goalkeeper’s left to win the game for the side from Greater Manchester – 3-0 on penalties.
